Why You Should Stop Smoking Now!

Posted on Nov 19, 2011

For many the addiction to smoking is so ingrained in their happiness, ironically, that they justify or rationalize internally that quitting also means feeling incomplete or unhappy. This is, of course, not true, but to the person it can feel incredibly real. The longer you smoke the more associations are being created and tied into the perceptively trivial act of lighting up. It becomes not a habit to quit smoking but more so an unraveling of attachments- and that’s what makes quitting so hard.

Increased chances of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and even blindness fail to deter individuals from trying this harmful substance. The reality is that they see a fraction of the bad cases or end results of smoking but see a great deal of reinforcements that smoking is harmless (people smoking but looking happy, healthy, and content, smoking on television is almost never painted in a negative light and so on).

With so many reinforcements that smoking is “ok” and so little to “prove” that it’s killing them, it’s easy to see where people can justify the act of smoking. In most cases the one thing that stops people, those who actually see the light, is fear. Fear of the harsh withdraw effects, the mental addiction that lasts a lot longer than the physical discomfort, and the constant reminder all around them of smoking being a normal social activity that they once thrived in.
