As a child, one of my favorite shows was the Jack Benny show. Probably one of the funniest comedians ever. He was a pioneer in television as he was in radio. For many years, his TV program was sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes made by the American Tobacco Company.





Remember, funny programs appealed to children and the advertising was planting seeds of programming. Let's review a particular episode of The Jack Benny Program. This program aired October 25, 1953 and was typical of all the early shows. The guest star was Humphrey Bogart, a mega-star of the time having starred in such classics as The Maltese Falcon and The African Queen. He won an Oscar for his role in The African Queen.





As mentioned, Jack Benny's program was sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes, a brand very much around today. The opening of the show made it very clear it was there because of Lucky Strike. Then, there was a commercial with Dorothy Collins singing the praises of Lucky Strike. The theme at this time was the LSMFT, letters with which I'm sure you're familiar. What do they mean? Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco. I heard that phrase so many times as a child, after all these years, it is still a reflex! Of course, that is what it was intended to be. The jingle that Dorothy Collins sang really appealed to children. At the end, the slogan, "Be Happy Go Lucky", a takeoff of a popular phrase at the time. Yes, they gave the cigarette a cute nickname of Lucky. Smoke a "Lucky"!





Then, during the show, there was a commercial written into the script so it wouldn't appear as a commercial. Now this is very deceptive to children. For this episode, Humphrey Bogart played a criminal that was brought in for questioning by Jack Benny's police character. In the course of the interrogation, with policeman Benny "sweating it out of him", Bogart repeats all the Lucky Strike advertising slogans. What effect did this have on children? It made Lucky Strike very appealing!





At this time, Humphrey Bogart was a big star known internationally. He had done many highly successful movies. Even today, there are posters of "Bogie" with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth; this was his trademark. He was a tough guy; a powerful role model. This certainly appealed to young people. As mentioned previously, this episode aired in October of 1953. In January of 1957, a little over three years later, Humphrey Bogart died of throat cancer. At the time of his death, the 5'8" actor weighed just 80 pounds.





What sort of deceptive programming did you get as a child from cigarette advertising? Let's look at some of the themes attached to the various cigarette brands:





VICEROY: "Gives double-barreled health protection."





PHILLIP MORRIS: "When smokers changed to Phillip Morris every case of nose or throat due to smoking either cleared completely or definitely improved!" and "Medical authorities recognize Phillip Morris proved less irritating to the smoker's nose and throat ."

LUCKY STRIKE: "11,105 doctors say Lucky Strikes prevent throat irritation." and "Ask your doctor about a light smoke."

CHESTERFIELD: "Nose, throat, and accessory organs not adversely affected by smoking Chesterfields." (This was Bogart's brand. Two packs a day)

OLD GOLD: "Not a Cough in a Carload"





An interesting note about the Old Gold slogan. Bing Crosby, well know singer/actor had a radio program sponsored by Old Gold. In those days before recordings became common, everything was done live. It so happens that Bing was suffering from a cold. Ironically, while doing the commercial and repeating, "Not a Cough in a Carload", he started coughing. This was actually, although accidentally, truth in advertising but the tobacco company didn't appreciate it.





Bing Crosby was one of the pioneers in helping to promote and develop tape recorders so that he wouldn't have to do a live show again. It is said that this on air incident was what motivated him to do so.





These are but a small sample of advertising slogans used over many decades. The wording was programming to help the smoker overcome the bodies normal defense reactions with such statements as, "Medical authorities recognize Phillip Morris proved less irritating to the smoker's nose and throat" and, "Not a Cough in a Carload."





They also told people they were smart to smoke and that doctors recommended it!





For young people, this gave them plenty of reasons to start smoking. This advertising was very effective as was demonstrated by the incidence of new smokers decreasing after cigarette advertising on television was banned January 2, 1971. However, due to the many people who were exposed to such programming, it continues to affect new generations as smoking is still promoted.





Smokers have forgotten most of the reasons why they started smoking because it was so many years ago. Using psychological memory recall techniques, people are able to find out just how much they were influenced by cigarette and tobacco advertising. This is an important step to undo the advertising programming that is fueling the WILL POWER to smoke. When the WILL POWER to smoke is gone, so is smoking!

Changing something about yourself is really not about changing. It is about "exchanging"- exchanging one way for another. How is this different? Changing requires you to control your behavior. This is done by the suppressing of your natural tendencies. Over time, this suppression only frustrates you. This is why it doesn't work in the long-run.





Exchanging - is to switch tracks altogether. It is a very different mindset. It is about replacing one life for another, instead of trying to control the current life. This means that, to some degree, you become a different person. To some degree you are "exchanging" one person for another.

Again, I say - it is about "exchanging"; one person for another, one lifestyle for another, one set of values for another.

Cancer patients who quit smoking will endure less pain

A new study has found that cancer patients who keep smoking actually feel far more pain than cancer patients who do not smoke. Quittingsmoking while trying to fight cancer will lessen pain, improve treatment, and raise quality of life.

Smokers are probably told to quit smoking every time they read an article about nicotine or walk into the physicians office. Here is another way of looking at it. A new study has found that cancer patients who keep smoking actually feel far more pain than cancer patients who do not smoke.





A cancer diagnosis is not the death sentence it once was, and therapy has improved in leaps and bounds over the past two decades alone. Smokers diagnosed with cancer may keep lighting up to relax or, in a way, kind of throw in the towel. But quitting could be the ticket to saving your life or at least improving your quality of life. And to get smokers started in that direction, here is direct evidence that you will not be in as much pain if you toss that cigarette container in the trash.





The study is in the new issue of Pain. Researchers found that, for a wide range of cancer types and for cancers in stages I to IV, smoking was associated with more severe pain, as well as a worse impact on a patients daily life.





The researchers believe that its important to explore smoking and pain in greater detail in a range of cancer patients to help illustrate further benefits of smoking cessation. The theory was that cancer patients who smoked would report greater pain, pain interference, and pain-related distress than non-smokers or former smokers.





They looked at 224 patients with a range of different cancers. In them, they found that current smokers experienced more severe pain than people who had never smoked, as well as more interference from pain in their daily lives. Among former smokers, evidence was found that suggests that quitting smoking may reduce pain over time.





The major strengths of this study are the varying types of cancer that were involved and the stages of disease. Though more research is needed (as always) to understand how nicotine relates to pain, doctors and patients should work together to aggressively try to quit the dangerous habit of smoking.





Apart from pain, quitting has been found to improve the overall treatment response and quality of life.

Don't be lazy, write it down! This exercise really works!





4. Call your friend.





This method works great. Call someone who can support you, who can talk with you for a couple of minutes. You can call your nonsmoking friend, or someone who's trying to quit smoking too.





5. Distract yourself with a quick task.





Think of a small task you have to do, something what would take you 5-10 minutes. Make a call, send a fax, make yourself a cup of coffee, water the plant in your office. Anything! Your task is to distract yourself until the urge will pass. (Hint: Try to find activity that makes smoking impossible!)





6. Drink a Glass of Water.





Take a glass of water and drink it with a straw. First of all having something in your mouth to chew on will help, second it will take you a couple of minutes to drink the whole glass and the urge will pass. Plus, don't forget that you're supposed to drink 8 glasses of water every day!





7. Power Tip.





Thats the disgusting one, but it often works. Print a small picture of smoker's lungs (you can find one here: http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/lungphotos.html ) and put it somewhere in your wallet. Smokers - iphone 'stop smoking' app ineffective unless used in alternate ways

Can smokers get help from their iphone? Not unless they use the iphone to beat themselves about the face when the urge to smoke strikes. According to app reviewers and experts in preventative health, the apps "don't meet accepted standards".





A study published online and in the March issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that the 47 apps reviewed rarely helped users get assistance through counseling, hotlines or anti-smoking medications. About half of the apps supported hypnosis, which has questionable effectiveness.





They were pretty poor. There wasnt one I thought I could recommend to a smoker, said study lead author Lorien Abroms, a professor of health communication and marketing at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.





Even so, apps do hold potential to be a valuable tool to help people stop smoking, Abroms said. Researchers have already shown that text messages provide helpful motivation to people who are trying to quit, and she believes smartphones might be even more useful because they are capable of providing a fuller multimedia experience. Youve got a great tool in your pocket, she said.





The iPhone apps reviewed by Abroms and colleagues including both free and paid applications that were available in 2009 did not make the grade, although they did some of the right things.





Theyd give you personalized motivation, and at least a quarter of them would ask you how much you smoke and when you plan to quit, and then theyd give you personalized feedback about the money youd save and what youd gain, she said. What they did terribly is that they didnt recommend or refer to a quit line.





Also, she said, on the whole, they didnt mention using nicotine replacement therapy, which has been proven to help people quit smoking. And very few apps helped you to get social support or reminded you to get it, which is also crucial to quitting smoking.





Abroms added that about half of the apps in the study embraced hypnosis. She said there is no evidence that hypnosis helps people quit smoking.





Frances Stillman, an associate professor of health, behavior and society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said the study findings make sense because they focus on the availability of proven techniques. She believes that behavioral therapy, along with anti-smoking medications when necessary, is the ideal approach to smoking cessation, although its not a one-size-fits-all thing.





It is important, she said, to connect people to the right resources, understanding that it may take them a number of tries before they finally quit for good.





Whats next for apps? Abroms said the Legacy Foundation, which advocates against smoking, has released a promising iPhone app. She said she hopes other public health groups will follow.





One Gilbert resident, who is admittedly addicted to browsing itunes for the latest and greatest apps, wonders if there is a "universal behavior modification" app that could help with many different kinds of addictive and compulsive behaviors. Hmmm, a new reason to shop for apps!

One in three smokers say they are likely to quit smoking because it is bad for their pet's health. Astudy, published Tuesday in the British Medical Journal Tobacco Control, represents the first time researchers looked at the smoking behaviors of people who own or live with a pet.





"Exposure to second-hand smoke has been linked to cancer, allergies, eye and skin diseases and respiratory problems in dogs and cats," saysSharon Milberger, Sc. D, the study's lead author.





The Henry Ford researchers reported that:





-- 28.4 percent of smokers said knowing that smoking was bad for their pets' health would motivate them to kick the habit.





The Commonwealth of Virginia is currently involved in its own battle over second-hand smoke. On Monday, the Virginia House of Delegatesapproveda plan for a ban on smoking in restaurants and many bars.In Virginia,one in fiveadults is a smoker.
