Be a Non Smoker! You CAN Quit Smoking! Quit Now!

I Quit! Be a Non Smoker!

I am a non smoker - actually ex - recovering smoker who is here to say, -You CAN quit smoking and be a non smoker!- Although it can be difficult to stop smoking, I am just one of thousands of non smokers who happen to be recovering ex smokers; and you can quit smoking and be a non smoker, too!

What does it take to transform from an active smoker into a non smoker? Does it happen overnight? Is the gift of recovery a miracle that only a portion of smokers receive...Or is there something more to the success quitting that is realized by a nicotine addict who is willing to take the steps and do the work to become a recovering ex-smoker?

It's no secret that nicotine addiction is extremely powerful...What's important for active smokers to realize is: It was just as difficult for ex smokers to stop smoking as it is going to be for you to be a non smoker. The question you are going to have to ask yourself when you try to quit is: Am I willing to take the steps on a daily basis to become an ex? Hopefully, your answer is, -Yes!- Because if it is, you have just as good a chance of becoming a non smoker as anybody else who is fighting to quit now.

I Quit!

The first step to becoming a non smoker is to decide and declare once and for all that you want to be a non smoker...Period. -I quit! I quit now!-

Understandably, that's a very scary affirmation...After all, your entire belief system is built around the fact that you need cigarettes to function in every day life. Guess what? That belief is nothing more than a false perception that will kill you! The truth is: Imagining a life without cigarettes is only scary because you are anticipating each unbearable craving as they come up...Stop! Fretting about how hard it's going to be to stop smoking will only serve to convince you even further that you shouldn't even try to quit.

The self-defeating thoughts that keep you addicted to smoking must be identified, visualized and put in check. Recovery from nicotine addiction is about learning to LIVE smoke free, shedding old resentments, and discovering the power of truth - both in finding better ways to interact with the human race and accepting the power I have to make a choice to live my life without smoking.

Peer Support

The next step to becoming a non smoker is finding sufficient support, which can be found everywhere if you're open to look!

Finding support at work is generally easy. Even though you've created one circle of professional associates and colleagues that smoke, it's never to late to introduce yourself to a whole new group of people who will help you be a non smoker. Not that people who smoke are bad...It's just that if you are going to break away from smoking you need to get away from cigarettes. Break time is only smoke time as long as you allow it to be. You can create alternative healthy habits with your non smoker friends at work as you trudge the road of becoming an ex smoker for life.

You may or may not find support among your immediate friends and family. Sadly, many smokers realize that the closest people in their lives are the ones who support them the least...Generally because the closest people in their lives are smokers. Quitting smoking is not the only event that sparks fear in the eyes of a smoker...Watching another smoker recover and possibly become judgmental is a very valid fear. It's almost like the old classic 'skew the family portrait' of dysfunction when an addict recovers.

In a cycle of abuse and recovery, it's not only the person with the problem who suffers, makes poor choices and learns to live with the abundant demons. Every body in the household develops a certain 'role' and identity they take on. The subsequent fact of behavioral health is that those living with the abuser or addict have a difficult time adjusting to the recovering version of life; thus leaving room for numerous resentments, resisting attitudes, and fear of change.

The same holds true quite often for fellow smokers of a recovering nicotine addict. It is rather normal for a smoker who wants to try to quit to be told, -There's no reason why you should even try to quit and be a non smoker...It's never going to happen.-

Even more judgmental or negative statements have also been known to take place; and it's vital for you to remain aware that any comment negating support is poisonous to your recovery and must be regarded as such. You can not afford to lend credence to statements that argue with your goal to quit now and stay quit smoking forever, because you can!

You may also find an adequate support in a local meeting room or in an online quit network group. All are free to join and offer unlimited tools to help smokers who try to quit smoking learn how to quit more successfully.

Get Education on Your Nicotine Addiction

Joining a support group allows ex smokers to find continual support by blasting daily 'issues' out to thousands of other people who are able to comment back. With so many comments coming back your way, choosing the most applicable advice will be a cinch. Speaking of which, that leads us to our final 'must have' for recovery.

Application of Tools

Aside from the decision to commit to quitting itself, applying the tools you learn about how to quit in your daily life is the most important step of recovery. While there is more work to follow, as long as you keep working on your quit and your state of behavioral health you canbe a non smoker for the rest of your life.
